RPG Crowdfunding Collections

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #115, including every tabletop rpg project started between 08/04 and 08/18.

After having been to the RatCon convention, there are no fewer than 66 projects.
First I’d like to briefly address the two German language ones. Dungeon Crawl Classic is being translated by System Matters and I am tempted; despite the artwork. Fans of The Dark Eye and Cthulhu should check out Sandy Petersen’s Cthulhu Mythos für das Schwarze Auge which combines the unlikely pair.
Onto the English projects, I am quite enticed by the Patreon of Samjoko Publishing for creating the Babel Magazine. The magazine offers English translations from tabletop rpgs from all over the world, an exciting endeavor, which got me to join the projects in the second I learned of it.
If you like gm-less story games, you should have a look at Dusk to Midnight. The game puts the players in the role of mech-soldiers doomed to be on the loosing side of a war, while not necessarily ending in tragedy. I consider the setting interesting, the zine-format as nifty and backed it. Another interesting setting, in my opinion, is offered by Titans Trail. The combination of Mecha, Kajiu und Victoriana, basically putting Pacific Rim and Dowtown Abbey into a mixer does sound intriguing enough that I got an eye on it. In comparison the setting of USAGI YOJIMBO is almost traditional. As traditional as a samurai tale with anthropomorphic animals can be. The setting is based on the Manga by the same name and the new edition does got fitted with the PbtA-engine. Which sounds quite cool. I haven’t read the „For the Crown and the Dragon“ novel by Stephen Hunt, sollten yet if you did – or like „weird historical fantasy“ – you might take a look at the Crown and Dragon Kickstarter, which fits it with the Savage World system. The Realm of the Gateway offers an original setting that spans and combines science fiction and fantasy covering various genres. If you are curious, you can check out the base rules on DTRPG. Back to a Story Game, Collateral Damage puts you in the role of the side-characters in an action scenario. This can cover various genres, as long as there is action, and the main goal is to make it out alive. The game aims to provide a fast one-shot experience and does sound fascinating.
There are as well two Break Kickstarter campaigns. Carbyne Jungle has an interesting setting of mixing science fiction and fantasy while offering three distinctly different play modes that can still be utilized in one game with each other. Which sounds like quite a feat and spiked my interest. Then there’s Broken! which doesn’t have either a setting or a system, but lets backers vote on it via their pledges, which I find quite strange.
Of course there are other projects, like the D&D sourcebooks The Islands & Aswangs Book, offering an insight into Filipino myth and folklore, and Witchcraft: Magic of Hereva, for the fans of the web comic. There are many cool sourcebooks to help you build your setting or city like Magical Industrial Revolution, City Builder and Maps: Buildings, Castles and Dungeons.
Well, there are many more sourcebooks, adventures, dice and many many other projects, see for yourself:

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Zine Collection #161, including every tabletop rpg project started between 02/15 and 03/03.

This collection contains about 82 ZineQuest projects, which is completed by 76 „normal“ crowdunding projects.
As the collection spans a bit more than two weeks, some projects have ended. You’ll find the ended projects at the end of the list. Considering the many projects, I only highlight those I backed or marked for consideration.

In regards of the ZineQuest, I would like to highlight and recommend the work by Emily McGlawn. She collected all ZineQuest projects from marginalised folks into one google document. Which offers the added information, which of these projects funded, and which didn’t.

I personally find the psychedelic artwork of Aether Operations RPG intruiging, and hence marked it for future considerations. Then there’s Little Katy’s Tea Party, a game about helping a girl to grow up. I like the „Alice in Wonderland“ look, and thus might go down that rabbit hole. Focusing on boys and men, I actually backed BLOOD FEUD. A game all about vikings and toxic masculinity. A quite interesting topic. As quite some contrast, I might chip into Necrojerks. The players take the role of said jerks, some undead one, and do their evil bidings. The illustration of Contemplation got me contemplating whether or not to back the zine,.. which is usuable as a solo game, micro rpg or NPC design aide. Last but not least I backed DM Yourselves, which promises help in regards to turn any adventure into a solo experience to enjoy. You’ll find these, and many more projects in here::

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #162, including every tabletop rpg project started between 03/03 and 14/03.

With the ZineQuest concluded, the number of projects launched is down significantly. Though there are quite a few brilliant games, thus let’s get to them.

I could not resist backing Expedition: Incredizoology. The game focuses on the taming, training and hunting of fantastic creatures. Where most games tend to focus on killing those, this one is more about the interaction. I like the idea and the system, presented in a video in less than 10 minutes, looks really cool. Hence, my recommendation! If you are interested in a /way/ more aggressive game, check out the official Terminator RPG. The game is based on the first movie and some comics, and doubles as a guide to the 1984 movie setting; apparently ignoring all the rest. It utilizes the S5S system, as featured in SLA Industry second edition, and one fun aspect appears to be that you can replace your dead character by pulling a copy from time or an alternate universe. This might sound a bit transcendental, but it has nothing on Cerebos: The Crystal Train. A game which explores the train journey of its passangers to a fantastical city. The people might be strange, will have hidden motives, attachments as well as hopes and expectations of the city. The game sports rather narrative system, with the whole thing inspired by works like Sunless Sea, Infinity Train, Invisible Cities and the like. Though I personally found myself reminded of the anime Night on the Galactic Railroad, a brilliant work, that hit home hard. Anyway, the project is cool. Tomorrow on Revelation III appears to offer a comperatively lighthearted experience. The characters find themselves fighting for survival within a hyper-capitalist space station, though they will eventually overcome the capitalism. Which sounds like a fun rpg. Then there’s Penny Heroes, a mix between a wargame and an rpg, with the focus on minis. If you like wargames and minis, have a closer look.
There are of course more project. Bestial Ecosystems offers advice on the ecology of various monsters and migh match up with the Expedition rpg, East Texas University: Study Abroad addresses the students traveling and the Book of Chance Meetings offers help for designing random encounters – which might fit nicely with the electronically sparklin Pixels dice.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #163, including every tabletop rpg project started between 14/03 and 04/04.

Following a brief hiatus, thanks to a broken ellbow, the collection is back with about 119 projects. Thus, let’s get to ‚em.

The first in the list is Solemn Vale. A folk horror game by Mark Kelly, inspired by works like Witchfinder General, Blood on Satan’s Claw and The Wicker man. The system features attribute based dice pools and includes a betting mechanic to facilitate the narrative. You’ll find that Justin Achilli is listed as one of the authors, and thus, over all, I am very tempted to back it. If you are looking for Indiana Jones style adventures in the Trinityverse, you have to check out Trinity Continuum: Adventure!, the newest edition by Onyx Path Publishing, that does utilize theor Storypath System. Fans of superheroes should have a look at Pandora: Total Destruction. A game that does spice it up by adding a dose of Akira. You might checkout the system with the preview version of the game at DTRPG, and it is described as being narrative first. Then there’s Tales of Teralecia, a D&D based game, with a Steampunk / SciFantasy setting. It offers some videos (and a QR code?) for further insight. Tho it ain’t my cup of tea.
Fans of Science Fiction, especially the gritty kind, should check out Death in Space. The rules light systrem is OSR inspired and the characters will explore the gritty vastness of space. The presentation seems solid, As does the site of the Dark Energy RPG. The world is based on the novels by the same name, and the SciFantasy mix invokes Shadowrun to my mind’s eye theatre. The system allows to focuses on heroes and villains, which sounds interesting. Then there’s Rising Shadows, which likewise aspires up to be cyberpunk. Though the text based description couldn’t keep ne interested. At least the thumbnail looks nice.
If you are a fan of fantasy, I’d recommend having a look at Goblin Country. The zine sized, gm-less game imagines you to be adventures goblins, who don’t appear as fooling as in other games but rather cute. Then there’s Ageless Chronicles, which features an online platform to facilitare the game. With the special feature being that you’ll be drawing the map as you play. Fascinating. Spears & Spells appears to be a classic, OSR like fantasy rpg, that only uses d6. Though the „flexible funding“ nature of the project does raise my alarm senses. Back at own discretion. The Eldritch RPG doesn’t have such a thing but appears to be normal. The system is developed to be versatile and epic and it should work for one shots and campaigns. Looks solid. Last but not least there is the War and Aether RPG. It is inspired by D&D, but features a classless system, that’s based on skills, and offers a brutal, realistic combat.
If you prefer your fantasy anime style, Anime 5E is a must. Instead of being another D&D 5E clone, it’s BESM (Big Eyes, Small Mouth) in fantasy mode. Which I would check out, were I more interested in fantasy. Another anime inspired game is the LokDown TTRPG, featuring a SciFantasy facilitated by the Tri-Forge.
In regards of the narrative rpgs, I like to feature Fly Softly. Inspired by the flight of the Monarchs, the game sees you playing as a human/butterfly hybrid, who journeys from Virigina, US to Mexico. On your travel you’ll be helping humans, ghost, mutants and other creatures. The whole presentation has me under a spell, and I am very likely to back it. If you are looking to back not only one, but six games, with one pledge, Possible Worlds has you covered. It offers a subscription services, that will run over the course of 6 months, bringing you one zine sized game each time. The games look interesting, and I got it marked to maybe pledge later. The Protocol Squared game by Jim Pinto is the most recent entry to the gm-less Protocol System family. You’ll be playing as soldiers, who return home, after a devastating fight. While the standard setting is a fantasy one, it might be adapted to portray historic wars. Another game addressing the blight of soldiers is Love & Barbed Wire. Set during World War I, the game has two players writing letters back and forth. Using a card based system. The whole presentation looks intruiging, despite the heavy topic. Then there’s Symposium. It’s a conversational game about posing philosophical questions, and answering them, according to some rules. It might stretch the definition of roleplaying game, but I feel it warrents being included.
If you like to back a solo game, there’s Rad Zone. A game in which you try to survive in an apocalypse. The presentation looks very solid and I think it’s worth considering.
In regards to gamebook you might back Legendary Kingdoms – Crown & Tower or Defenders: Throne of the Bandit Lord, maybe both. They look good.
Among the many, many other projects I decided to back the Fatum, Dark Myths character creator deck. The design of the cards is nice, and the presentation how you build your character or draw inspiration, looks easy enough that I may actually use it. Though the playmat thing does help. Thus I recommend you check it out too.
You’ll find these, and many, many more exciting, interesting and worthy projects in the collection:

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #164, including every tabletop rpg project started between 04/04 and 04/11.

The collection is back to it’s regular schedule at covering a week. Still there are 11 fresh games being kickstartered. Let’s get to them.

First there is Devil Dice Island, a small Powered by the Apocalypse game. The protagonists, each with some skeletons in their closet, strand upon a creepy island, where they’ll eventually die. I imagine it’s a bit like Lost, just without being dragged out into oblivion and a rather divisive six season. Next to that I know the designer, consider him a friend, a dp think that the project can be trusted to deliver. Check it out. If you are looking for a game for the whole family, there is Adventure Builder, which is presented in a quite colorful box. The introducation video highlights an accessible system, the option to have the game be education, and the whole thing looks quite splendid to me.
The game First They Came is definitely not for kids, yet quite intruiging. The ttrpg is available in English and Italian, and is played blindfolded, with three to five players, and an interactive soundtrack. Storywise it’s set in Berlin about 1942 and the characters appear to be hiding out to not get caught by the regime. While the topic is quite heavy, the presentation looks solid and the mechanic is quite unique. I am not sure if I would play it, but it is for worth having a look and considering it. The card based storytelling Partners is way more light weight. It puts two players, and just two players, in the role of a classic buddy/cop duo, with one straight and one rash person, and has them solve crimes and other mysteries. Another game that looks quite solid.
We Die Young RPG is a game about supernatural beings in the (19)90s,…. and had me hooked pretty much with the short text. Even as I realized that my 90s – I am born in 80’s – are to contemporary teens and tweens what the 60s and 70s are to me. Any way, the illustrations are on point, it’s a rare case in which I like the creature mix (zoo approach) and the OSR-inspired system appears fool prove. The whole thing is already written, and I am in. Another OSE influenced is The Bleakness. A horror ttrpg, in which you’ll be traveling into the snowy, and titularly bleak, Norths. In which you don’t only have to survive, but as well face various unsettling creatures. I gave it a star, for future notice, and recommend it. Rangers of the Midden Vale is another OSR inspired game, with some storytelling game influences, in which you explore a wilderniss and protect the innocent. It’s less gritty and more fantasy, yet sounds cool to. THETA is the last of the kinda OSR/OSE inspired games. It offers a quite unique setting, that combines Fantasy & SciFi elements and looks solid.
The Science Fiction rpgs are spearheaded by the new edition of Blue Planet: Recontact. A hard science fiction game about existing in a waterworld. It appears to be lavishly illustrated, and a 80-pages quickstart offers more details. I consider it worth having a look. If you are looking for a Science Fantasy setting, the Arkelon Chronicles might have you covered. The setting reminds me of Starfinder, and the system, in which both player and GM each roll a d20 to determine the success of an action, looks interesting. Though the corebook is quite a tome, with it’s 600 pages.
Last but not least, if you are up for a solo game, The Broken Cask has you running an inn. Housing patrons, sending out adventures and other stuff. It looks neat, and I got it flagged for later consideration. Check it out.
There are of course more projects. Like the Troika sourcebooks A Bug’s Guide th the Shimmer and Academies of the Arcane. The Venture Maidens Campaign Guide for D&D 5E intruiges me, whereas Mörk Borg fans might like to check out the LORD adventure.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #165, including every tabletop rpg project started between 04/11 and 04/18.

Let’s start with having a look at Orbital Blues. A roleplaying game, in which you play Space Cowboys, similar as in Cowboy Bebop. Which is one of the inspirations next to Guardians of the Galaxy and Firefly. The narrative, rules-lite system is d6 based, with about five important core stats. Next to that the game comes with a casette, and thus a soundtrack, which is available via Spotify (for free) too. I think it’s a very cool, and I am tempted to back it. If you are intothe Symbaroum setting, yet would like to play it with D&D 5E style rules, the Ruins of Symbaroum project from Free League has you covered. A more than solid project from an experienced project from my point of view. Jamie Noble´s Masquerade is more of an immersive theatre, rather larp-y, experience, with a card based system. In the end, I decided it looks roleplayingly and solid enough to warrant an inclusion. The last game to mention is HAWTHORN, an horror RPG. It offers detective-style horror inspired by cthulhoid horrors. You can checkout the quickstarter at DTRPG.
Among the other projects, you’ll find the Comets & Cockpits setting for D&D 5E. Fantasy City Sites and Scenes III offers stuff to create locations for your random fantasy game, while the Tavern Tales offers, well, taverns, for D&D 5E. In regards of the dice, I like the Purryhedrals, transparent dice with little dice figurines in them.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #166, including every tabletop rpg project started between 04/18 and 04/25.

Let’s start with Legacy of the Soul Flame. The game presents an epic fantasy setting, in which the undead won. With a focus on those undead, snow & ice, exploration and bloodties. In a world that unites old technology and magic. The 420 pages strong book is already written, and will ship via DTRPG PoD. The d6 based system has been used in Astulae before and got improved. Plus, the setting can be used in other games. It looks cool and like its sure to deliver, check it out. Then there is the Modern 5E core book, which offers exactly what the name promises. A contemporary setting and rules within the D&D 5E framework. With illustrationen by Larry Elmore. I am somewhat surprised, it hasn’t funded yet, and will keep an eye on it.
Fans of Space Operas are in for two treats. On the one hand, there is Swords And Spaceships. Next to the normal array of various, creative races next to humans, the setting includes weapons, body modifications and the option to customize ones ship. The system is d100 based, and spices it up with a FATE inspired mechanics for modifying conditions. On the other hand, there is Tangent Space. Which does as well offer a great variety of races and setting appropriate elements. The system is based on dice, that scale along the abilities of the character. It does look sympathetic.
If you like game books, check out the project A Warriors Quest. It kickstarters a number of books, set in the world of Elvyon. They are already exist in French, and the whole project appears worth checking out.
Next there are many other cool projects. Like Sirens: Battle of the Bards, a D&D 5E setting with and by Satine Phoenix, or the D&D 5E sourcebook Into the Feywild, which fascinates me as a player who more often than not plays druids. Then there are nice dice projects like the Handmade Resin DND Dice Sets, the glow in the dark Fluorescent Dice or the strangely designed NEW VTB DICE.

@Teylen,

I don't have anything to add but I just wanted to say, "Thank you", for taking time every month to curate your list and publishing here on this site. You are rendering a great service for both game developers and those looking to support game designers.

Best,

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #167, including every tabletop rpg project started between 04/25 and 05/02.

Following the May celebrations, I am back on time. Thus let’s get to the projects.

Garden of the Giants is a game in which you’ll be playing anthropomorphic mice, who’ll experience adventures akin to those from children tales. The presentation is beautiful, and I like the setting. Plus, there is a preview for interested backers to check out. I think it’s worth having a look. Then there’s Courts of Blades, which focuses more on politics, diplomacy and skullduggery in a renaissance setting. You’ll be playing a coterie caught in the web of intruiges and drama, with a system based on Blades in the Dark. Worth having a look too. If you like to have 9 games with one project, Pretentious Games for Villains and Bastards would be right up your ally. The games are made to be played in a one shots or micro-campaigns. anbieten. The kickstarter projects offers a little description of each of the games, for you to check out.
If you fancy Fantasy and PbtA, Fantasy World should be right up your ally. The game offers an interesting looking setting, which doesn’t seem to be a standard Edo one, and it will be available in English and Italian! Maybe you like your Fantasy with more of a Sword and Sorcery drift, in which case you should have a look at Blood, Sweat & Steel. Systemwise it is based on Fudge, and the project highlights game specific rules.
If you are a fan of Science Fiction, I would recommend having a look at ChangedStars. The game offers a bright yet prelious future, inspired by utopian, feminist SF works, as well as contemporary gritty ones. The whole game is d6 based with 4 attributes and looks solid, with quite interesting illustration. Thus it does see me tempted. Ironsworn: Starforged transports the Fantasy Ironsworn setting and rules into the Science Fiction genre. The game can be played alone, with two players or with a „regular“ amount of players. The system is PbtA inspired, and the makers proved their mettle with previous projects. Check it out.
Maybe you are looking for a game book? ROTATOR offers the first entry to a Science Fantasy story, written by a creator living in Ukraine. It features cool illustration, and is worth having a look for those alone.
There are of course more interesting projects, like the Eldritch Sands setting for D&D 5E, the bright green, printable Hollow Dice with braille readability, or the Shelf File of Holding, to stuff all your Kickstarter books into a nice DCC folder thing.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #168, including every tabletop rpg project started between 05/02 and 05/16.

Following a brief break last week, where I didn’t manage to finalise the collection, I am back. There are no fewer than 17 games and 1 VtM project. So, let’s get to them!

I’ll start with Crescent: Nautical Fantasy TTRPG, a game focusing on an ever expanding, large archipelago. They are waiting to be mapped, explored and the players will engage with mysterious magics on the various islands. The game will be virtually supported, and the core rules be available for everyone for free – if the project is funded. I am fascinated by the maritime setting, the illustrations look nice (save, maybe the thumbnail) and the system seems solid. I recommend you take a look. Broken Compass is somewhat maritime as well, yet leans more into the pulp aspect, exploring and plundering ancient ruines and stuff. The game was previously funded in 2020 and delivered. The project offers an opportunity to get your hands on the beautiful book and adds two new campaigns. The Deittman Files aren’t as watery. You’ll be playing a group of investigators and psychics venturing onto ghost hunts being supported by the Powered by the Apocalypse. I like the idea of ghost hunting, and I like PbtA, thus it gets a hearty recommendation. Then there’s The Morra Cinematic Game System by Mighty Narwhal Production. The game enables you, and your friends, to setup scenarios akin to Hollywood movies as well as TV series. Whether it’s about original settings like punching Nazis, encountering Cthulhu as a person interesting in magic with a magic school, or drama along works like Supernatural, Guardians of the Galaxy and more. The game system is interesting, and the game features an extra system to make sure boundaries are respected and everyone is having fun. I do know and trust the creators, and recommend you check out the game.
Magical Kitties Level Up! is the game to open the fantasy category. It has you playing the titular, fluffy, magical kittens, who venture into adventures. Family friendly ones, thus it isn’t of the „dark & gritty“ variety. I personally was charmed at the term „kitty“, though the other aspect do entice me too. I would be in, if it were within my budget. Ataraxia Legends is a game inspired by (classic) J-RPGs. The system is only briefly adressed, but shows the JRPG inspiration. While I consider the presentation a bit lacking, you might enjoy it, especially if you are into JRPGs.
Among the horror games I am quite fascinated by Broken Tales. It offers a dark view upon classical fairy tails and put those upside down. With aspects like villains seeking redemption. Systemwise the game is d6 based and offers various modi like one for OneShots or guided campaigns and one for chronicles. Another project I would back, have I had the resources. Nowhereville is another d6 based horror game. The characters are trapped within a city, they can’t leave. Which gives the game a Stephen King like vibe. The game is very much to the point, offering just one pledge level. Check it out. Then there is Into the Wyrd and Wild, which explores the horror or venturing into an unpleasant wilderness. The book offers a system neutral setting, which might be played with D&D style rules. Though I think, you might not need D&D? Anyway, I like the project and recommend you have a look. Last but not least, there is They Stirred. It’s set in an post-apocalyptic setting with zombies. It might be ambigious to place it in the horror section, yet givven that the narrative game focuses on hard choices, that’s where I placed it. It has a nice presentation.
Let’s continue to the Cyberpunk games. Necrobiotic would have fitted a post-apo or horror category. Yet the transhuman idea of playing mechanically altered dead people, who are now not that dead, but still scurry around, with more intelligence than a zombie, makes it a good fit. I do like that it’s card based, that they offer a quickstart, the illustrations, and would be in, if I had no restrictions. Favor is a more classic Cyberpunk setting and game, featuring a „neo noir“ look and feel. You’ll be playing a bunch of criminals, who try to do gigs, to get their hands on new chrome and stuff. As a bit of a twist, it isn’t set on earth, but a colonized planet. Yet still, you can’t play bog standard humans, but got the choice of interesting „Anthroforms“. The d10 based system appears to be a good fit, and I recoomend the project. an. You will find another cyberpunk game in Augmented. Though given that you’ll play goons, who’ll do the companies, who own ‚em, dirty work it is notably more cyber than punk. The system is so ruleslite, that the char sheet got no stats. It is quite an interesting angle.
If you like Science Fiction, you should have a look at Once More Into The Void. You play a troupe, a family, who after breaking up has to get together one last time, to get a job done. The system is inspired by the one in Mobile Frame Zero: Firebrands, which means it is gm-less and consists of 9 interlinked minigames, that will create a story. Quite an interesting project. The Crushing Thunder! is another scifi game, set in a post apocalyptic world, in which you have to life with emental dinos, which you might battle with your mech suites and stuff. The system is 3d6 based, and the whole projects appears to have been done with quite some heart.
You’ll find a quite fascinating journaling game in You Are the Dungeon. As the title indicates, that you will play as a dungeon. Which has to handle adventures, rummaging around in your inners. You can guide them, trick them and maybe reward them. The game uses a tarot deck for conflict resultion, and I am intruiged by the concept. Mythara LARP on the other hand, is a card based and D&D inspired core book for Larping. The rules are available for free and the game might be intruiging for fantasy fans.
There are other interesting projects, though considering I already wrote a lot, I will keep it to one. Vampire: the Eternal Struggle Unleashed offers to print 4 decks, which offers cards that haven’t been printed previously (they were only available as pdf)! You can get the new V5 starter box and more decks along with the new one to. Well, and I am in, because I can get some fresh V:TES Giovanni, of clan Giovanni, before they are „reduced“ to being Hecata. Take a look, consider it. If you are from Germany, there is a „collective pledge„, that will get you at least 10% off the decks. I do admit it is an ECG, and thus not very ttrpg’ly, but the link to VtM have had me include it.
You’ll find those projects, and many more, here:

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #169, including every tabletop rpg project started between 05/16 and 05/23.

I hope you enjoy the Whitsun holidays, if you are celebrating or get the monday off. The week saw a nice number of very cool crowdfundings being launched, who’ll you find in this collection.

Let’s start with Into the Motherland, a science fiction roleplaying game, set in an afrofuturist world. The design of the world, and variation of cultures ones character can be from, looks quite cool, and once you’ve backed it you will get a look upon the rules with the quickstarter of the game. The creators appeared competent in their presentation, and I recognize BD Walters as well as That Bronze Girl from various VtM Actual Plays. All this to say, I do have faith in the team. Check the project out! I’ve flagged it for later evaluation, whether or not I can squeeze it into my budget. Something the game has in common with Somniauts. In this game, the character will unravel mysteries by using weird science to delve deep into dreams. The rules are available on the games website, and are influenced by games like The White Hack and The Black Hack. I do like the illustrations, which reference the dreamscapes of Dali, Escher and Moebius. Thus I do recommend checking the game, and supporting it. Knock-Down Drag-Out, at the other hand, is a rather „down to earth“ game, set in the „Country Noir“ genre as introduced by works like Ozark or Winter’s Bone and others. I like the illustration, and the rulelite game system has a card based mechanic for chases, which apears to be cool. Check it out, if the genre speak to you. To raise up the mood, let’s take a look at The Awfully Cheerful Engine: An RPG of Action Comedy! project, The game is set to emulate 80s games, and thus offers pulp action from Indiana Jones, to Urban Fantasy and onto Spaaaace. Basically everything from Danger Mouse up to Rick & Morty. The system is a ruleslight d6 pool system, that sports 4 attributes. The character creation can be experienced with their website and is fun. While I am not really a fan of the genre, the project enticed me to consider it – if I had the cash for it. Then there’s the superheroe game Good Guys Finish Last by Postworldgames Jim Pinto. Well, the revival of the existing game. While I am not a fan of the genre, or the title, it looks good and I trust Jim Pinto to deliver, based on my experience with his other projects. Thus it might be well worth having a look.
If you are a fan of Horror, you should check out Collector. The micro rpg offers a post-apocalyptic setting, in which the characters try to get enough gold, to pay the goddess Ubato of the Black River, to escape the limbo into the beyond. The game is designed to work as a „gateway“ game to entice casual players of the gritty campaign and get them hooked. The structue and mock up of the game looks fine, the 2d6 based system fast. I am tempted and recommend it. Then there’s A Shape in the Dark. The game offers to experience horror stories akin to those shared at campfires, and aims to attract people to play, who weren’t previously interested. I like the idea, and quite a bit of the design, but won’t watch the Actual Play to see it’s system.
Of course there are more cool projects. Most notable, at least to my interests The Story Engine: Deck of Worlds. A set of cards meant to enable players and game masters to create worlds and settings at a moments notice. I loved, backed and rejoiced in the final delivery of the previous Story Engine project. While I might have to back out, purely because of budget reasons, I wholeheartedly recommend the project. There’s a project to fund the Ludonarrative Dissidents podcasts. Which will be hosted by Ross Payton, Greg Stolze and James Wallis. An interesting combination. Then there’s LEDGES, basically things you can hang onto your GM screen, to have a kind of shelf, which looks rather cool.
You’ll find those projects, and quite some more, in this collection:

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #170, including every tabletop rpg project started between 05/23 and 05/30.

This week the there are a nice, interesting projects, to which I’ll get to now, without much ado.

I’ll stat with this world is not yours: an RPG zine. It’s a small, as the title says zine-sized, game for one to two players. It explores the topic of generations, changes and what one leaves behind. The narrative system is inspired by games like Microscope. I do consider the topic quite interesting, and hence recommend that you have a look. Fans of the cyberpunk genre should have a look at UNDER NEON. The game offers quite an interesting system for character generation, where everyone starts out the same. Along with a more traditional d20 system. I do consider the idea quite interesting, and the project looks nice.
Among the (urban) fantasy games Exalted: Essence by Onyx Path Publishing is a project worth considering, imho. The game offers a streamlined version of the 3rd edition, and basically combines and condenses quite some sourcebooks into 250+ pages. Have I had more money, were the shipping not as expensive, and the delivery in 2023, I’d be totally in. As is, I will wait for the book to hit my FLGS. If you are looking for some lighthearted urban fantasy, Fae’s Anatomy should have you covered. The game about melodramatic medical mysteries is about treating fantasy creatures with rather bizarre ailments. The system utilizes narrative focused rules inspired by Fiasco and Hillfolks, and the game is clearly inspired by series E.R., Greys Anatomy and more. I think it’s a quite cool project, worth considering. If you yearn for post-apocalyptic urban fantasy Graywalkers Purgatory has you covered. You will battle the supernatural creatures and horrors with guns, magic, katanas, bones and stuff. The project offers a quickstart, to get a look at the system and setting, and you may choose from two systems. One D&D 5E inspired, and one called Weavemaster (3d10 based). It does look nice.
If you like gamebooks, The Isle of Torment offers quite a massive experience. There are more than 2000 descision and the char sheet looks cool. If you like swashbuckling fantasy, take a look.
There are of course more projects. Like the Knock! Issue Two compendium, with a ton of stuff for OSR gamers, or FISK BORG and Galgenbeck After Dark which got MÖRK BORG fans covered. I do like the White Whale in Dice and the Dice Sculptor: Custom Designed Dice appears to me as an interesting thing.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #172, including every tabletop rpg project started between 05/13 and 06/20.

This time the collection is back, including a little preamble. There are quite some nice projects started last week, so lets get to them:

I will start with the Urban Fantasy game Defiant RPG. The game has the premise that quite some supernatural creatures entered the world to destroy it, yet proved to be defiant to their mission, and choose to integrate into the cities, ruling and having fun. The players get to play royal fallen angels, demons, gods and the like, who are in a nice position of power. The card based system intrigues me, and the book did already exist as a PDF. The combination of genre, setting and system got me backing it, check it out, if you want to see for yourself. If you like to play a fairy – one of the small folks – Fairy Trails will have you covered. Following an attack by a villain, the fairies had to flee their country in a card, and thus are traveling all over the world. The game itself is Powered by the Apocalypse and looks quite very cute. I can recommend the creators, as they delivered a previous project to my satisfaction – take a look. The Otherworlds Core Rulebook offers some planet hopping fantasy, with a video that oozes quite some positive JRPG vives (imho). The story driven d6 system appears functional. Stepping away from lighthearted roleplaying game, you might want to have a look at Pink Cloud: An Adventure Game for Friends of Bill. Based on the „12 Stepper Program“ and inspired by the „Big Book“, it offers fantasy adventures through the lense of recovery. I personally got swayed by the video, which offered a solid, alas not flashy, presentation, and chimed in. Maybe you’ll do too? Well, and to not end on a down note, Ultimate Dungeon Showdown is a card game with a roleplaying game, from the creators of The Gamers. You can play the card game with the roleplaying game or the roleplaying game on its own. There is ton of cool merchandise by artisans like Level Up Dice and it looks cool. If you are a fan of the Zombie Orpheus, check it out.
Heading over to the Science Fiction games, let’s start with Synthicide: Sharpers in the Dark. The project ports the existing cyberpunk setting and game over to fit into a „Forged in the Dark“ rule set. Which has been modified to add mutations and stuff to your characters playbook. I did star the project, and might pledge later on. Lawman mixes its SciFi themes with a healthy dose of western and humor. I’d place the comic artstyle somewhere into the eighties, and the creators refer material like Trigun, Robocop and Idiocracy as inspiration. In regards of RPG they apparently took ideas / vibes from HoL (Human occupied Landfill). Well, and the system that’s based on a single d20 can’t be bad. Thus, have a look. If you want to engage in mechs and mayhem, take a look at Tenzin Gate. I do like the design of the mechs, and maybe there’s info about the dice based system on their website?
With that we’ll get to the gamebook. Arkham Archives aims to offer a complete collection of their gamebook series. The project might look splendid and enticing, yet I would voice serious concerns / warnings regarding pledging it. I backed their first project, the first part of the Arkham Archives, and received neither the eBook nor the deck of cards. Which earns the new project an heartfelt poop-emoji.
There are of course other, better projects. If you like D&D 5E you might like to see the Adventures in Oz transformed into a settting for said system, or want to spice up your game with Mask of Power. The Creature Feature Quarterly Vol. 1 offers monsters for MÖRK Borg and I am still pondering whether or not to back the The Oracle Story Generator deck of cards.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #173, including every tabletop rpg project started between 06/20 and 06/27.

The collection is back with a small number of very interesting projects. Let’s have a look at them.

I am quite enamored with Floria: The Verdant Way. The game is a translation of an Japanese ttrpg, by the team that brought Summon Skate to fruition. In Floria, you’ll play people who are actually called „Florias“. The towns are surrounded by a quite magical forests, which the Florias venture into, explore and collect herbs. Being Florias, they can utilize those herbs, integrate them into their bodies, to magical effects. The dice system is essentially 2d6 roll under, with a truly interesting system for using the herbs. Which involves drawing onto a grid. Take a look for yourself! You will find, that Not the End, has a more narrative approach. The game that was first published in Italian, before receiving a translation, sees one playing heroes. Those characters are described with words writting onto hexes within a matrix of hexes. Thus the system is named „HexSys“. It doesn’t use dice, but instead colored tokens. You can have a look at it via a quickstarter the creators provided. Check it out. The Tide Breaker RPG does take a cooperative approach to setting creation. The system uses a d6 based pool system, and is supported by other elements like „stunts“, „showstopper“ and others. Which looks all in all quite sound. You might find even more action in the superheroe game S5E, which is system wise based on the mechanics as provided by D&D 5E. The rulebook will offer you tools to create your own setting, and powered characters. You’ll find a „ready to be played“ setting in the „Midnight City“ book. Plus the package gets really rounded with a monster manual. The project looks nice, and I recommend having a look at it.
In regards of gamebooks, the Graphic Novel Adventures books combine the concept with comics. Something, that almost got me hooked.
There are of course more interesting stuff. If you like DCC, you might like to check the sourcematerial provided in the fancy looking project DCC Dying Earth or delve into the adventure named A Discordance with Dzyvatz. Fans of Trophy gold should probably have a look at Tides of a Dead Sea. Though, if you look for some system-neutral material, Oracle Issue 12 – Celtic Theme got you covered (tho you get 5E rules) as well as the Tabletops and Tentacles Magazine #3. In regards to the „solo game“, I wasn’t sure what to make of The Book of Asmodeus. It looks like a mixture of a gamebook, a book offering riddles and a phone app. I considered it quite interesting, and hence included it, even with the tenuous ttrpg connection.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #174, including every tabletop rpg project started between 06/27 and 07/11.

Having had to pause last week, I managed to scrap a bit of time together, to get it done this one. Still, my small prelude, might be shorter than usual.

Let’s start with GhastBashers. A game in which you catch ghosts, ghostbuster style, using a narrative d12 system. Fans of superheroes get a D&D 5E ruleset based game with Capes & Crooks. If you like to design your own setting, you should check out Anyworld Tabletop Roleplaying System. Next to the rules required, it offers introductionary scenarios for quite some genre.
Fans of the old tentacled creature, can face him with Cursed Captains of Cthulhu swashbuckling style. Which is a somewhat fresh approach with a 4d6 based system. Those who prefer Cthulhu like it’s been done in the past, can get their serving of Call of Cthulhu Classic from Chaosium.
The HYPERBOREA 3E kickstarter aims to finance the new edition of the famous fantasy rpg, with quite some fans and thus funding already. Chromatic Dungeons appears to be a reaction to the current „new TSR controversy“, and uses a diverse set of creators to offer an OSR game with modern sensibilities in mind – basically aiming to actively include people. Then there is Highcaster, aiming to enable the players to shape up legends, using the „Caster System“ as previously seen in ttrpgs like The Great American Novel and The Great American Witch. Peace the RPG might not look much, going by the thumbnail, yet the project offers a broad and interesting looking description. I do recommend having a look. Then there is Fate of Dungeons, a game that aims to offer a fates based old school rpg. Sounds strange? Yet, it is what the pitch says.
If you like narrative games in the style of Fate and Numenera, and mechas, you got to take a look at The Tears of a Machine. If it weren’t for the system used, I would have backed it, as I quite like the theme. MEGALOS: Aetherological Crystalpunk sorts itself into the Science Fantasy genre and uses a narrative d20 system. For more infos, check out the project.
I am quite tempted to back the solo ttrpg Dwelling: A Solo Game for Ghosts. I like the horror theme, the exploration of a haunted house, and the interaction with the titular ghosts. Plus, its the first solo game, that I noticed, which features Safety Tools. Very cool! Then there is the solo game Adventure Squared. You get a solo ttrpg, journaling game and create maps. Three things in one project.
Last but not least we get to the gamebook category, in which we find Chasing Tail. A game in which one – as a furry – chases the tails of other furrys, and might engage in fun times. Which is why it has the „mature audience“ labe. Facinating.
Next to all those projects, there are the Deadly Skull Dice & Sunken Skull Resin Dice.

Teylen, has anyone ever done a writeup/study of how many of these projects reach funding?

Teylen's picture

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #175, including every tabletop rpg project started between 07/11 and 07/18.

I’ll start with Dreampunk, a surreal roleplaying game. As the name suggest, you’ll be playing a dreamer, who within their dreams, may interact with other dreamers. One might brave adventures, face nightmares and has to figure out whether they even wanna wake up again. The system is based on 78 uniquely designed, tarot sized cards, offers 9 playbooks for the players to choose from and can be played with, or without, a GM. I backed it, and consequently recommend it. Then there’s the newest game from Greg Stolze named DUELING FOPS OF VINDAMERE. The setting ist about fencing and being somewhat Bridgerton style, though the main focus appears to be on the mechanics. The game is designed to be played right out of the box, with zero prep, and no GM, sessions lasting somewhat between 1 and 2 hours. The further descriptions found in the video and in the text, remind me somewhat of his game „A Dirty World“, and I recommend you take a look. Fans of Science Ficiton rpg should have a look at Galaxies – The Game. It describes its system as rules-light, fast and easy to learn, and the setting seems nice. Plus, the core book got one covered with 100 adventure hooks.
In regards of the two fantasy ttrpg, let’s start with Crowns. The game offers a OSR set of rules, an adventure and a sandbox. With the OSR rules offering a unique combat system, and adjustments in the areas of monster design, character progression and healing. It’s presented in a nice, to the point magazin format, and I actually like the illustrations by Jacob Fleming – at least the cover one. The last full game to mention is Fallen Worlds. The game offers a postapocalyptic fantasy setting, with a focus on the fantasy aspect. It will come in two books, and judging by the pledge design it uses dice. If you are interested in a fantasy world that appears somewhat extensive, take a look.
In regards of gamebook, Jonathan Green is back with RONIN 47, a mecha vs. kajiu book from the ACE Gamebook series. I backed several of his other gamebooks, and do gladly recommend that you check it out. Even I am somewhat intruiged. Then there’s The Dragons Tears: Embers Fate gamebook. Uhm. It’s the first project of the creator, who hasn’t backed any other project (with his account). Plus, I’ll rate the plan to write a gamebook, including system testing, in 4 month ambitious. I personally won’t back it and I advice caution.
There are of course more interesting projects. Squeaks in the Deep will enrich both ttrpg Pugmire (dogs) and Monarchies of Mau (cats) with playable rats and mice and an adventure – in which you don’t have to play a rodent. I trust the creator and like the previous book. Thus, check it out! Other than that, Mörk Borg fans might enjoy the adventures in the KENNELS OF KARNAGE and I really like the design of the Dragon Tears Dice.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #175, including every tabletop rpg project started between 07/18 and 07/25.

This time there are many, cool games being funded. If I could, I would have backed each single one!

To start with something unusual for the English version. Donnerhaus currently aims to finance Freude schöner Götterfunken… a campaign set in 1917 including a full rpg system. The game is delivered in a box with the rule books, maps, dice, pregenerated characters and more. I recommend having a look, if your German is sufficient, or you are interested in German rpgs.

Back to the English projects, let’s start with Monte Cooks newest game The Devil Made Us Do It. The game puts you into the role of agents who are originally from the far future, yet ended up in roundabout nowadays. They have to succeed at heists, to keep the world intact. For this task they got the option to alter situation by just retelling the story. Making a door being there, which previously wasn’t, having a guard being nicely distacted or causing a blackout. Yet, if they go to big with the reality bending Paradox will hit, or,… well… bad stuff happens. The game is designed to be zero-prep, to be run right out of the box, and I feel enticed to back it. Then there’s the project Pixies, Wyrms, Demonicity, which offers three Tri-Stat system (as seen in BESM). Everyone of the three games comes with a core booklet (32 pages), 6 pregens, 6 short scenarios and 4 custom dice. Pixies has you play as the titular pixies, who made their home on human homes. Wyrms has you playing creatures who fight and consume each other. Well and Demonicity sees you as secret oparatives who fight against the *dramatic voice* infernal darkness *coughs*. I like the concept, and the pitches for Pixies and Demonicity. Check it out. Then there’s the micro game Banality. Which fits in a three times folded flyer. The first scenario of the quite narrative game, puts one in a post-utopian society, where the machines got uppity and one gotta flee them. I imaginge it to be like the the episode Automated Customer Service of Love, Death x Robots. Depending on the success of the project, 4 games might be added, offering new scenarios and more stories. I think it’s cool and the asking price is more than fair.
I did actually back the noir rpg Bloodshadows: Chronicles of Guf. The game offers an alternate universe, in which some creatures that go bump in the night are known to roam the city of Guf. The flair is kinda 40’ish and one can play a mobster vampire! I already got the box of the previous edition, Battlefield Press being reliable and happily backed this one. With the system being completly overhauled with a Savage Worlds ruleset being a plus in my book. Take a look, and back it. Please, I want it to actually come to fruition. Fedora Noir offers a more classical noire game for four players. While one will play the detectives, and do detective stuff, one will be playing the (in)famous hat, offering the inner monolog. A session should take about 2 hours and the game is card based.
Of course there are more interesting projects. You’ll find material to enhance your fantasy ttrpg session with the magazines The Oracle Issue 13 – Floating Islands and Delver: Resources for the Random-Rolling Referee – the first one with a focus on D&D 5E rules and the latter more leaning towards OSR. If you like playing D&D 5E, and you are looking for more stuff for druids and about the fey, you could have a look at Druids: Secrets of the Primal Circle and Professor Gilroy’s Guide to Fey. Though there is more D&D 5E sourcebook material like Wickerpunk RPG, next to many more projects. Fans of Mörk Borg might like to take a look at In the footsteps of the Mad Wizard – a miniature game and rpg supplement.

The collection is back with a neatly small number of projects, including Monsterhearts 2nd edition coming to Germany. The mix English games posed more of a unique challenge, tho let’s see and get to it.

The second edition of the science fiction game a|state RPG is my clear favorite amongst the games. The new edition uses a Forged in the Dark system and presents a quite neat take on it. The game takes place in a giant, suffocating metropolis, in which the 1% basically custom designed their human form and consider those who can’t afford it as essentially not even human. Which reminds me of Gattaca but with a more capitalist take on it, or the episode „Pop Squad“ from Love, Death + Robots. Whilte it is SF, I do think I might make use of some setting elements within my VtM games. Plus, on top, it looks nice and the gimmicks are nifty. I backed it, and recommend the project. The fantasy game Neoclassical Geek Revival – Acidic Edition aims to fund another print run of their game, as they sold their first one. With the only stretch goal being to aim for an offset print. The narrative game, with inspiration from OGL, looks very solid, thrustworthy and gets a clear recommendation.
Well, usually, my introductions of games aim at being truthful, but positive. An approach that all three projects challenged and kinda broke to various degrees (usually its like max 1 or 2 projects). Thus, if you don’t want to have a negative approach, just skip it? Let’s start with the game Down With The Beargeoisie! The rpg uses a d6 system and appears to be mostly based on the puns Beargeoise and ProleBeariat. While the illustration looks nice, and while I tend to be open towards left(leaning) games, this one appears to thin for my taste. Though it has more meat to it than Timelines: Super Human RPG. A narrative superheroe roleplaying game, which aims to be the best supes rpg ever. How you may ask? I don’t know, the project doesn’t really explain it. Then I took a look at the pledge levels…. uhm, yeah, no. Stop wasting my time. Which doesn’t get better with Blackguard: A deceiver of Time. The projects aims to produce a ttrpg, gamebook, manga and Netflix tv series pilot – at a wholesale cost of 66k. Stuff like the system of the ttrpg? Apparently the creators don’t bother with such trivial things, yet rather present illustrations of (imho) drastically varying qualities (from kinda nice dowards). You can back it, but in my estimate you could light your money on fire instead.
Back to the cool projects! Because, there are quite some, after the games. I did back the adventure module Micro Dungeons for DnD. It looks great, and it comes at a total of $1 – don’t be confused by the pledge it’s in MX$. If I had a dog, or similar animal, I’d by them Paw-lymorph Pet Toys. Basically dice shaped food dispensers aiming to make eating fun for your companion. There are of course cool looking other dice, like the Starfarer Sci-Fi Dice, yet the other dice look nice too. My second favorite are The Pioneer Dice, even as I doubt that I would use them. The SCIENTIFIC BARBARIAN is a quite big magazine (think Tankōbon) about post-apokalyptic topics, you can enhance the system of your choice with the modular fantasy setting The Travellers Guide to Prymordia, there is an European Folklore Bestiary for Chivalry and Sorcery and A Trio of Tabletop Tomes! offers a whole total stuff for the games Thunderscape, Tiny Legacies, and Infinity’s Edge.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #178, including every tabletop rpg project started between 08/01 and 08/15.

Following a small, one week break, the Collection is back, featuring 18 games and quite some cool other projects. Thus, let’s get to ‚em.

Let’s start with the dieselpunk ttrpg CARBON GREY. The setting explores a war-torn, alternate universe version of 1910, offering quite some conflict. The illustration look cool, and the setup with a box, accessoires and even minis is nifty. I feel somewhat tempted to get in myself, though take a look for yourself. If you are more into steam than diesel punk, or love both, Cloudrunner: Fate of the Skies offers a setting by videogames like Skies of Arcadia and Guns of Icarus. You’ll find that it uses the Fate Condensed system for the gameplay and the project looks quite solid.
Heading over to the fantasy games, let’s start with the elephant in the room, that’s Avatar Legends. Being the official ttrpg to both tv series/IPs Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legends of Korra series, Magpie Games choose Powered by the Apocalypse as the system to go with. You can estimate how the game will by the information provided by the project, and the quickstarter. I did categorize the setting as „Fantasy“, which might be a strech, yet summarizes imho the possibilities from playing within the „quite fantasy setting“ of the first Avatar to the „industrial / steampunk fantasy of Korra“. The project offers a broad variety of stuff next to the core books. Several adventures, a sourcebook, dice, a map, and other stuff is available and offered as a very fairly priced package. Plus, the system will be supported with more sourcebooks in the future. Next to that, the Kickstarter is blowing everything that came before out of the water, in regards to funding. More than doubling the previous most successful ttrpg book project – with more than two weeks to go. I am a fan of the series, trust Magpie Games with their projects, the project is really competently made, am a fan of the series, thus I am sooo in. You should check out the project, even if you haven’t seen the series – it’s imho a really cool thing. If you like straight up classical fantasy, check out The Black Hack Second Edition – Redux. The OSR style game is quite well known, and thus I just recommend to check it out. Fan of the game will find that it offers a nice box set, and it should be a cool entry into OSR style games for newcomers.
If you’d like to play games akin to the kid adventure series, as brought back to fame with Stranger Things, take a look at Don’t Tell Mom & Dad. The game offers quite an interesting d20 system, with stuff like a Scared-o-Meter and other interesting things, that you can check out on their project description. If you like your Urban Fantasy heading more into the direction of Pokemon, take a look at Monster Wrangler. The game allows your character to have a „monster“ as a pet, tame it, train it and have it fight other monsters. I like d10 pool system, in which you try to amass successes, though that might be my V:tM love speaking. Anyway it’s a cool project worth having a look at.
Onto the Science Fiction games, Omega Horizon got you covered if you aim for big, Space Opera style games, with factions at war. The d6 pool system, as presented in the video, sounds really cool, well and if you are not that much into crunch, the book offers a more cinematic alternative. I am actually consider backing it, and thus it gets my recommendation. Then there’s RAYGUNS & ROBUTS, offersing a rules lite system focusing on Atomic SciFi. The 48 pages strong zine doesn’t leave room for chatter, and the zine does not only offer a small ttrpg, but can be used as a sourcebook for all kind of games.
You won’t find any guns, I think, in the Verdant Isles: Teatime Adventures RPG. The heartwarming game focuses on tales and adventures told by anthropomoric animal people, with a focus on conflict resolution aside traditional combat. It’s still D&D 5E compatible, and looks really cute and fluffy. Check it out. Mausritter: Box Set & Adventure Collection offers the opportunity to play similiarly cute critters of the mouse variety. The classic and well etablished ttrpg gets a nice physical box, along with new adventures. Though you can check out the ttrpg itself for „pay what you want“. Another clean cut recommendation.
Among the solo ttrpgs, let’s start with KINLESS. A solo adventure for Mörk Borg, which doesn’t require the core book to be played. Fascinating. As is Golden Mart. A solo rpg in which you play employees of a convenience store, who has to keep the shop running – despite the apocalypse taking place right outside. Interesting.
Then there’s Deep Space D-6: The Long Way Home a game which leans more onto the gamebook side of things, despite being able to be played as a solo rpg. I like the presentation, and might back it at a later moment. If you are interested in straightup gamebooks, Innsmouth: The Stolen Child got you covered. Set 15 years before the events of Lovecrafts novel takes place, the character will explore a mysterie. Whether they survive, die or probably go mad, it’s up to the player.
Then there are a bunch of games, which had me confused whether the project is ttrpg enough to be counted as such, or like a trap. Not really knowing what to do, I put them together in a small category. The Northwood Fables claims to be a rpg, yet has all the set dressing of a „Krimi Dinner“ (crime dinner). You get 6 murder mystery settings each featuring 10 characters, narrator booklet, audio track, a dinner receipe, a (alcoholic) beverage receipe and fitting art works. Yet, apparently got scripts? Which makes it a bit of a Larp? Well, if you are curious, take a look. I noted The Death Race, because of its strong link to Mörk Borg. It offers OSR style rules and a setting about, well, deadly races, and might played standalone or be integrated into a Mörk Borg ttrpg session. Which imho puts it in this twilight zone. With the game Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread I think it might be a dungeon crawler? Though it looks more ttrpg like, than all the other dungeon crawlers I noticed. Thus, it made the list. DUNGEON DEGENERATES offers basically the same question „dungeon crawler or ttrpg?“. Yet, it looks a bit more ttrpg-y than Arydia, with the characters having D&D attributes? Anyway, the look is quite nice, and reminds me of psychedelic OSR illustrations.
There are, of course, many more, cool and interesting projects. The zine The Oracle Isse 14 – Venetia, City of Masks offers a fantasy setting inspired by, well, Venetia. The cool presentation had me back it. If you like Call of Cthulhu, you might be happy to learn that Delta Green: The Conspiracy finances a new edition of the famous sourcebook. Well, and I do like the sparkling dice of the Dicebound Volume 2 projects and I am intruiged by the d6 designes of the Z dice.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #179, including every tabletop rpg project started between 08/15 and 08/22.

The week saw the lauch of just 3 games, next to a bunch of other ttrpg related projects. Let’s have a look at them.

Let’s start with Stranger Hills, a game which works without the role of a GM, dice or other random elements. Instead players take up character bases, with strengths and weaknesses, and cooperatively create a story, using tokens as a small mechanic. The story is set within a world that experiences the end times, inspired my settings like Dark Sun and Mad Max. To workout stories, and prevent „drawing blank“, the game offers its players a ton of story prompts. It’s a cool projects, and I consider chiming in. Next to that Protocol Squared: Eons by Jim Pinto. The game offers a wholly evolved version of the previous Protocol engine. While the previous version used cards, I am not sure how the new system works. Though considering the pledges, there appear to be dice or cards at used. I would have been tempted, as Jim delivers and I like Urban Fantasy/Horror, yet I really bounced off the claim that the game is the best GM-less game ever. Uhm, if it is, I will pick it up, once its released and the hype train is rolling. Anyways, I would recommend the project to fans of GM-less games and those interested in their design.
The Exquisite Corpse in Maggots‘ Keep is a gamebook, in which you play a reanimated corpse / skeleton thats ordained in quite some jewelery, wondering „Dafuq? Why am awake and kinda alive?“. The book offers the quite novel approach, of being written bei 11 authors! Thus, every choice you made, will be written by a different author, who has limited insight in the previous text. It’s cool, and I am tempted to chime in.
There are of course more cool projects. For example Sölitary Defilement offers printed, polished solo rules for Mörk Bork, I’d back if I wouldn’t need the Mörk core. If you like Hârn, the setting Melderyn Hardcover might be right up your ally. Right up mine, is the The Complete Folio Black Label collection, it’s a combination of illustrations and map design. Dice connoisseur could get into the holiday spirit with the Christmas Tree Dice or enjoy the Heroic Dice Of Metallic Luster. You might like to enhance your game with the RPG Fantasy City Sound.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #180, including every tabletop rpg project started between 08/22 and 09/06.

Finally, as I am back home, I finished the quite opulent list covering two weeks. Let’s have a look.

The ttrpg Picaresque Roman: A Requiem for Rogues, is my personal favorite. The game originates from Japan, and LionWing publishing offers a translation of its most recent 5th edition of the game published by Group SGR. In regards to its system the rpg utilizes a simple 2d6 mechanic, which is quite common among Japanese indie games, and adds elements of ‚Hidden Traitor‘ games to the my as seen in games of Werewolf, Mafia and the like. This results in the aspect, that at the end of a session there are winners and losers. In regards of the world, the game offers a richly described contemporary metropol as its setting setting, where players assume the roles of scoundrels, inspired by videogames like Yakuza and Persona. There’ll be plenty of scenarios, the artworks and illustrations are top notch, I like the setting and I collect games from Japan that that got translated as well as games with a „mafia theme“ – thus I am a very, very enthusiastic backer. I recommend that you’ll take a look at it as well, and join the project. Focussing on a more somber, serious approach The Price of Coal is a narrative game exploring the chores and challenges miners in West Virgina face from 1921 to 1924. The workes tried to fight for a secure work enviroment, better pay and the ability to unionized. Considering that the town was owned by the mining company, it resulted in martial law being proclaimed, the workers rising and eventually the US army intervening with lethal force. The game is designed to be played with 3 to 5 players, with each player playing two characters, and a card deck for conflict resolution. The game aims to keep people aware of this specific part of US american, which I find a commendable aim. Check the project out! Stepping away from history, or a distinct setting, The BURST System offers a genre and setting agnostic system with the boundaries of a zine. The system is designed in a way, to allow gamers to create a world in the blink of an eye and explore it with a fast 2d6 system. While it doesn’t feature stunning illustration, I consider the argument to rather focus on availabilty and not being to expensive fine arguments. Plus, in line with this thinking, the game will be released as CC-BY-SA. It’s a nice little project and I recommend having a look at it.
Moving onto the fantasy games, I’ll start with Briar and Bramble. The game offers you the opportunity to play as intelligent, yet not anthropmorphic, animals. Focusing on exploring the English countryside, creating communities and being able to play all kind of animals. Considering that works like Animals of Farthing Wood and Watership Down were inspirations to the game, it isn’t like totally heartwarming. The ttrpg is available for free, in its totally for download, and the project aims to really only fund a the print run, which I consider a solid goal and hope it will make it (it needs some help though). Down we Go is a more traditional fantasy game, in the style of Old School roleplaying games. The exploration of the depth under the city Infinopolis is facilitated by a ruleslight system, that utilizes d20 and 6. The game offers fascinating illustrations and presents the city of Infinopolis as a full setting. I do recommend you check the project out, and support it. It seems cool. Driven into Darkness is quite bright in comparison. Yet, once you get used to it, you'll find a d20 system, which among many features offers simultanous combat. The various aspects of the game are presented, and interesting. Take a look for yourself. Then there’s Fantasy Apocalypse 1000. It isn’t as much a pure fantasy game, but designed to enable games in all kind of genres. I couldn’t bring myself to dig through the wall of texty campaign description, and thus you’ll have to check it out, if you so desire.
Moving onto the horror ttrpg, let’s start with Gravemire, a game that takes a deep dive into the Louisiana Bayous. Set in about 1894 it presents the setting with additional supernatural elements. Having watched the excellent video, digged through the illustration and read the vivid descriptions I’ve got a feel for the kind of horror the game is going for, and feel somewhat in love with it. [It’s a bit like the opening for True Blood, without the vampires] The system is d12 based and a unique creation by its author. There are elements I am not exactly a fan of – like freeform skill creation – yet it offers quite interesting aspects like downtime. I am very tempted to back the project, got it on my watch list, and recommend you’ll take a look. The other horror game is SURVIVE THIS! What Shadows Hide. With it’s core book it offers horror within a contemporary setting, inspired by X-Files, Supernatural and Hellboy. The second book offers a sourcebook to add Lovecraft inspired horror into the mix. Well, the cover reminds me of the show Hannibal, and you’ll be able to play as vampires or ghosts – among a host of other creatures. Thus I am in, alas, for I am in Germany, only at a digital level.
ANKUR – Kingdom of the gods is a Science Fantasy ttrpg, which aims to finance it’s second print run, and basically its second edition on top. The setting jumps of kinda egypt into space, and has ancient myths as one of it’s building blocks. In regards to the mechanic, you’ll find a rulelight d12 roll under system, which is modular and thus can be adjusted to once needs. Considering the creators have had successul previous projects, I recomment it. I don’t think Stars Without Number RPG needs a recommendation of mine. The popular OSR based Science Fiction setting and system aims to finance an offset print, and just that. If you like physical books, and you want to get a good OSR-SF-RPG, this project is a no-brainer.. go and back it.
There’s a single gamebook in the list called Golemcraft. While the Kickstarter description doesn’t tell one a lot, it offers an Itchi io concept demo.
Of course there are more interesting projects. Fans who look for a spiritual successor to the famous Dark Sun setting, for D&D 5E, should have a look at Red Dawn: Into The Dawnlands. You’ll find that Mark Rein-Hagen chimed in with a D&D 5E setting of his own: The Curse of BloodStone Isle. It offers a first look at the Lostlorn setting and includes vampires. Yet considering the „experience“ that was the I Am Zombie project, I’ll be keeping my distance from the project. I may not keep my distance from The Oracle Issue 15, which offers system neutral material focused on Caravans and Travellers – considering that my backing of The Oracle Issue 14 offers a delightful experience. Take a look. Another interesting magazine is Junction City, offering system neutral content for it’s horror adventures. Delving into the sourcebooks, I am quite very tempted to back the Herbalist’s Primer. It offers description of (realworld) plants, to be used by Magicians, Worldbuilders, Alchemist and GMs. Very vool! As is the idea of the Custom Bestiary, which offers illustrations, and leaves rooms for the „reader“ to add their own text, stats and stuff. In regards to supplements for system, Stingers & Spores enriches Savage World with material to play high-fantasy insects and Historica Arcanum: The City of Crescent offers advice how to create alternative history settings based on cultures of the Near East for D&D 5E. While I am tempted to back the Historica Arcanum, I couldn’t resist the Adaptable Encounters for D&D 5E. A buck for enriching D&D games with encounters? I am in. Then there are beautiful dice like the Metal Space Dice and fascinating projects like the Dungeon helper – which aims to turn minis into basically Amibos with their own interactive D&D sheet.

Kickstarter announced plans to get into cryptocurrency / nft.
Which would suck and let to some people preemptively protest by not starting campaigns.

I still hope that KS will reconsider that idea

The collections covers a bit more than a months because I had two weeks of vacation and because Kickstarters „bot protection“ managed to kill my will (and ability) to do it for a while as I couldn’t do the searches or open the projects. I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #200, including every tabletop rpg project started between 07/31 and 08/15.

The 200. edition of the collection covers two week and happens to feature exactly 200 active projects; even a Japanese ttrpg – the last one was in 2020. With the Zine Quest being a big reason why so many projects got launched.

Of the projects I like to highlight Mail Order Apokalypse. It’s a zine-sized ttrpg about mail being delivered in a post apocalypse using Into the Odd inspired rules.
I did consider doing a brief introduction of all the games to honor the 200. edition, yet, well,…. 73 games are a few to many,… thus, take a look for yourself:

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #202, including every tabletop rpg project started between 10/23 and 10/30.

The collection is back to the weekly rythm and hence features a more digestible amount of projects.

Heist – The Roleplaying Game is one project that immediatly caught my attention. The games is inspired by movies like Ocean’s 11, series like Better Call Saul and videogames like the GTA series of games. As that’s quite a broad field, even as it tends to focus on the lighter aspects of the genre, the focus on the various aspects does vary, Though the cooperative creation of the setting should aid the group in adjusting it to their taste. Systemwise it uses a 2d10 system, which works with set difficulties and considers the margin of how close or how much above one managed to roll. The general design approach is to have the system support the game, and offering enough room to be unobstrusive during play. The game is available in English and German, and I do recommen having a look.
I did as well consider Diapers & Daycares as I like the parody presented, yet am hestitating as the small book delivery is focused to the US and am not entirely sure how long the idea would entertainment. Another interesting project is the Eye To The Void sourcebook, offering insight into various Divination approaches and how to use them for a game.
There are of couse many more interesting projects, like the ttrpg about trans-human stories or a new edition of Paranoia or the charcuterie dice that poked my appetite. Just have a look and decide for yourself which projects fit your interests:
