The overall goal of the meta-fiction is to keep the family together if at all possible. This may involve making compromises that your character may not be prepared to make, so it may not be achieved. Players who want individual goals should make a note of what they'd ideally like their character to achieve by game end, and attempt to achieve this through gameplay. These individual goals may of course conflict with the overall goal, in which case the players must decide which goal they think is more important.
